What Is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?
By Dr. Ahmed Bhatti
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive procedure performed by interventional radiologists to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids. During the procedure, tiny particles are injected into the arteries supplying blood to the fibroids, cutting off their blood supply and causing them to shrink over time.
Unlike traditional surgical options such as hysterectomy or myomectomy, UFE requires no large incisions. The procedure is performed through a small puncture in the groin or wrist, similar to a diagnostic angiogram. Most patients go home the same day and return to normal activities within one to two weeks.
UFE is particularly appealing for women who wish to preserve their uterus, avoid major surgery, or have medical conditions that make surgery risky. It treats most or all fibroids in a single session, regardless of their number or location.
Common symptoms that UFE can address include heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, frequent urination, and lower back pain. Success rates exceed 85% at five years, with most patients experiencing significant symptom improvement within three to six months.
