Treating Knee Pain Without Surgery
By Dr. Ahmed Bhatti
Chronic knee pain from osteoarthritis affects millions of Americans. For those who have exhausted conservative treatments like physical therapy, medications, and injections, the next step has traditionally been knee replacement surgery.
Genicular artery embolization (GAE) offers a third option. This minimally invasive procedure targets the abnormal blood vessels that contribute to knee inflammation and pain. By blocking these vessels with microscopic particles, GAE reduces inflammation and provides lasting pain relief.
GAE is performed as an outpatient procedure with no incisions — just a small needle puncture. Most patients experience gradual improvement over weeks following the procedure. Studies show significant pain reduction and improved function in the majority of patients.
Ideal candidates include those with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis who have not found relief from conservative treatments but wish to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery.
